We initially see the island through Ralph’s eyes. He is elected as leader and makes sensible plans to build shelters and a signal fire.

Overweight, asthmatic and of lower social class. Piggy’s intelligence and sound moral judgment is overlooked by most of the boys.

Head chorister and upper class, Jack appoints himself leader of the hunters. He neglects the signal fire and enjoys hunting, eventually hunting Ralph.

Isolated from the others, Simon is a dreamer. The Lord of the Flies talks to him and he is killed by the frenzied mob.

Roger shows violence from the very start, picking on the littluns. He sharpens a stick at both ends when the mob hunts Ralph.
