Comment
This received a D grade because although it addresses all the required objectives, it does not always develop the ideas. The technical terms are a little limited, although it is clear that the candidate has a sound overall understanding of the characters. It does go beyond being descriptive and generally uses helpful quotations.
For a C grade
- AO1: Develop use of technical terms beyond simile and metaphor, and explain their effect or significance, such as the suggestion of European ‘purity’ in St John’s appearance.
- AO2: There is reference to structure, but this needs to be developed – look at parallels between Rivers and Rochester.
- AO3: Name characters in specific texts as much as possible – reference to country vicars is too vague.
- AO4: Draw on critical perspectives more deeply to explore character, for example ‘different sides to Jane’ comment could have been linked to psychoanalytical approaches.
