Comment

This answer was awarded a B grade because it addressed all the relevant AOs and showed some critical understanding of the book, using quotations and technical terms to back up comments. The writing is generally clear and precise, though lacking in places in terms of expanding on ideas and references.

For an A grade

  • AO4: Rochester’s ‘jetty’ eyebrows – could have been developed to discuss the Victorian belief in phrenology.
  • AO1: St John’s eyes as ‘instruments’ – the scientific metaphor could have been developed to explain the rationality of St John in opposition to Rochester’s Romantic passion.
  • AO3: Look at Rochester as a Byronic hero and reference more complex Romantic texts such as 'The Corsair' to demonstrate wider knowledge of genres.
