Comment

This is a convincing, well-argued essay with a wide range of references and evidence from across the play as a whole. Quotations are aptly chosen, and the viewpoint is coherent throughout. There is detailed analysis and a number of critical approaches are referenced, such as Marxist and performance theories, although sometimes not in as much depth as would be required for additional insights. There are some helpful references to context, for example in relation to exploration/discovery, conventions of marriage and some mention of Shakespearean conventions in the comic genre, although this area could have been developed.

To improve the answer:

  • Keep focusing rigorously on the main topic: towards the end, the argument veers off into other areas about the nature of love which, whilst interesting, do not add anything significant.
  • Be sure to develop ideas to their full potential, which is not the case in a few instances here; for example, the reference to the metaphor of decaying produce in the ship could have been expanded.
  • Develop the references to critical approaches, which are rather fleeting in places; for example, could draw on specific feminist critics, such as Natasha Korda, who comments on a related notion about women as commodities − ‘domestic commodification’.
