Comment

This is an excellent response, close to achieving the very highest standard. The quotations are well-chosen and woven into the texture of the student’s own prose. A strong sense of the differences between the two texts is conveyed, with a sense of the different methods the two writers use to achieve their ends. Historical context is not always explicit, but is relevant and helps form understanding. Different ideas are fused together to make a series of insightful and persuasive points. However, an awareness of other readings and critical interpretations could have been stated more explicitly, despite reasonably good use of a Feminist approach.

For a Very High Level

  • Make sure that the introduction signals the answer’s structure of looking at first and second generations.
  • Be clearer about the dates of the two novels, and the historical contexts in which they are written and set.
  • It may have been useful to introduce ‘Mrs Dalloway’ into the discussion earlier.
  • Show more often how critical approaches, or individual critics, can shed light on the novels.
