Comment

This essay moves fluently between analysis of the extract and related examples in the novel as a whole. The candidate has analysed the effects of Syal’s language and techniques well, with some embedded quotations and further explanation. There is also some reference to social context. The response moves logically from one aspect of Meena’s relationship with her family to the next, ending with a general overview and a final point about literary technique.

For a Very High Level:

  • Use more sophisticated vocabulary where it would be helpful.
  • Analyse language in more depth, with appropriate quotations.
  • Analyse the narrative voice and how it expresses Meena’s childhood attitudes and adult perspective.
