Comment
There is a lot of evidence that this student has understood the basic story of the relationship between Pip and Magwitch. There is comment on their first meeting and some events that lead up to Magwitch’s death. Sometimes the language is informal, such as ‘dad’, and there is no clear order to the essay. The writer repeatedly uses the phrase ‘Dickens presents the relationship …’ but sometimes the comments are just general information about the characters, such as the information about Estella. Quotes are generally relevant but there is almost no language analysis.
For Grade 4
- Trace the relationship in a more logical order.
- Use some technical terms such as ‘imagery’ or ‘foreshadowing’.
- Avoid repeating ideas and phrases.
