Comment

There are some good points and the answer looks at lots of different aspects of the extract and some parts of the book as a whole. There could be more references to Dickens as the writer and closer analysis of language, rather than giving straightforward explanations of what words mean without saying much about the effect of language.

For Grade 5

  • Try to use some relevant vocabulary to describe the language and Dickens’s devices, such as imagery or non-standard English.
  • Embed quotations rather than adding them on to statements.
  • Try to keep sentences short or use connectives such as ‘however’ or ‘although’ or use semi-colons, to link ideas together.
