Comment

This is clearly written and explores some of the different aspects of the relationship between Pip and Magwitch across the novel. There is some close analysis of key words and phrases to get points across, and some evidence of personal interpretation. One language feature is noticed – the rule of three – but there could be one or two more such terms used, such as metaphor or imagery.

For Grade 7

  • Develop the links to the rest of the novel, such as Miss Havisham, and the parallels between this extract and Chapter 1.
  • Expand the style of expression by using a wider vocabulary so that more subtle ideas can be developed.
  • Quote more regularly from the extract.
